Feb 22: Judging was tougher than ever for this year’s PLC Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing. In its seventh year, the $20,000 acquisitive art award is among the most significant prizes for drawing nationally and this year has received more than 400 entries.
In the initial stages of the judging process, art critic Mr John McDonald, shortlisted 48 artworks for exhibition from over 420 entries submitted to the Adelaide Perry Gallery for consideration.
Mr McDonald commented on the quantity of exceptional works and the challenge this presented during the judging process.
“Choosing this year’s exhibition was an exceptionally difficult task. There was an abundance of excellent entries, meaning that many good works had to be left out,” he said.
Ms Jo Knight, curator of the Adelaide Perry Gallery at the Croydon campus, said the entries this year “reflected the broad range of contemporary Australian artists’ approaches to drawing.” Respected artists in contention for the award include Dagmar Cyrulla, Charles Cooper, 2011 winner Karen Barbouttis, Nick Mourtzakis, Patrick Shirvington, Dong Wang Fan, Tim Allen, Sussie Heymans, Pei Pei He, Graeme Drendel, Vicki Parish, Stephen Bird and Catherine O’Donnell. A $2000 People’s Choice Prize will also be announced at the conclusion of the exhibition.
This year’s Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing finalists’ exhibition is currently on display at PLC Sydney’s Adelaide Perry Gallery.
